On the road to Compostela
Archive footage
- Old lorry driving through a quarry,
- Romanesque architecture: niches, columns, arches, carved porch vaults, statues,
- Ruined and abandoned churches and monasteries,
- Clothes drying under the dome of a ruined church,
- Chickens emerging from a walled-in church porch.
For almost two centuries, from the 11th to the 12th century, Romanesque architecture covered Western Europe with churches and monasteries. The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela became almost as important to a Christian as the pilgrimage to Mecca was to a Muslim, and seven centuries later, as we retrace the route to Compostela, we realise just how much the East and Africa have influenced architecture and sculpture, giving the churches of western France a special place in Romanesque art.
