Alone in the middle of the stage, seated behind a long trestle table covered with a sheet, an actor, Jean-Pierre Bodin, mumbles happily with a glass of wine in his hand. He evokes with humour and tenderness the daily life of a provincial town, Chauvigny, whose social and sentimental geography he describes in detail, centred around its cultural heart: the municipal brass band. Born in Chauvigny some thirty years ago, he spent ten years involved in the activities of the municipal brass band, which is one of the few activities in the area that still manages to bring the various generations together. A condensed reflection of the local population, the band’s presence is often noisy and indispensable as a social binder and anti-depressant, breaking up the provincial monotony with the rhythm of its bugle calls and drum rolls. But what do the people of Chauvigny think of the portrait that the local boy paints of the manners and customs in question ?
